Dornier Do 29 - Avión Experimental

1958

Dornier Do 29 - Experimental Aircraft

1958

The test extreme short take-off and landing techniques, the Do 29 experimental aircraft was jointly developed at the end of the '50s by Dornier and Deustche Versuchsanstalt für Lufthart (today´s DFVLR). The first flight of the first of three prototypes built under contract to the Federal Ministry of Defence was made at Oberpfaffenhofen on 21 December 1958.

The propeller shafts of the two 270-HP Lycoming engines installed in the wing of the Do 29 tilted downwards to give the propeller thrust an additional lift component for a considerable shortening of the take-off and landing run. The basic design of this experimental aircraft used to study the transition from STOL to VTOL technology, corresponded to the Do 27 but was considerably modified in the fuselage front section and wing centre section. The heavily glazed, single-seat flight deck was equiped with a Martin-Baker ejection seat.
